Abia Reps Caucus cautions Deputy Speaker Kalu.
WRITTEN BY GORDI UDEAJAH
Abia Labour Party ( LP ) members Caucus in the House of Representatives have cautioned the Deputy Speaker of the house, Hon Benjamin Kalu, of the All Progressives Congress ( APC ), who represents Bende Constituency, tasked him to engage in sober self-reflection, and ruled that his hubris and inciteful remarks are unbecoming of a Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly.
The Caucus led by Hon Ginger Onwusibe, representing Isiala Ngwa North/South Constituency, in a press release, also accused Hon Kalu of always boasting to be “number six” in national protocol, but instead of leveraging his office to support projects for Abia’s growth, he was always playing cheap politics in his six years as a member of the House of Representatives.
” Since then, Hon. Kalu has carried on with arrogance and recklessness, making provocative, sycophantic, and inflammatory statements both publicly and privately”.
They stated that their caution was sequel to a recent unfortunate political development in Abia state “occasioned by Hon Kalu’s unguarded and unhealthy utterances as Deputy Speaker.
Hon Kalu had on Sunday at Umuahia, the state capital while addressing APC rally, reiterated that his APC party will democratically dislodge the governor Alex Otti led Labour Party government in 2027, but ensure the re-election of President Bola Tinubu, to place the state and federal governments under the APC .
He also alleged that the Otti administration has not done projects commensurate with the state monthly income, which he put at N38 – N40 billion, against the N18 billion average published by the state few days ago.
Caucus recalled that in 2024, when elected officials were still settling down to the serious business of governance and delivering dividends of democracy to the peace-loving people of Abia, Hon. Kalu fired the first political salvo.
” He ( Hon Kalu ) openly reiterated a statement he had made in the past, boasting that the All Progressives Congress (APC) would “capture Abia” in 2027, flaunting his “number six” position in the federal hierarchy as if political power were a personal trophy”.
Caucus held that such careless talk, repeated shortly after Hon Kalu assumed office as Deputy Speaker, was not only unintelligent and insensitive but also unbecoming of a public officer who ought to embody humility and emotional intelligence.
According to the Caucus, Hon Kalu’s conduct reveals a deliberate strategy, to incite the Federal Government and the ruling party at the centre against the Abia State Government, while peddling falsehoods to discredit the administration of Governor Alex Otti, adding that his recent actions are not about service, but personal ambition and power-drunk tendencies, even at the expense of peace of Abia state.
The Caucus argued that if the state Governor Dr Alex Otti has consistently shown respect for both the Age and the Exalted Office of Mr. President, and maintains a cordial and constructive relationship with him, “Hon Kalu, in the same spirit, is expected to accord due respect to the Governor, not only in recognition of his office as the state’s Chief Executive but also in Deference to his Age, in keeping with Igbo cultural values and proper upbringing.
” If the massive public endorsement of Governor Otti’s achievements, witnessed recently in Aba as applauded by the President, who was ably represented by Distinguished Senator David Umahi, and the good people of Abia during completed roads commissioning unsettles Hon. Kalu, it is no justification to pursue mischief and incitement”.
Caucus therefore urged Abians and Nigerians to disregard Hon. Kalu’s empty boasts and divisive rhetoric, describing his actions as being driven by selfish ambition, not love for the people, warning that ” If he ( Hon Kalu) persists on this trajectory, he may find himself at odds with Ndi Abia”.
Concluding, the Caucus asserted that
Governor Otti enjoys a cordial relationship with Mr. President, and that no amount of political scheming by Honorable Kalu can disrupt Abia’s steady progress.
” The people of Abia are politically discerning. They can see through Hon. Kalu’s selfish antics and understand that his fight is not against one man, but against the collective interest of good governance, peace, and progress in Abia State.
” We call on all Abians- young and old, market women and traders, professionals, party members, elders and elites across party lines and political persuasions to stand united in support of the transformational work of Governor Alex Otti, OFR, and to reject attempts by any individual to drag the state backwards for personal gain”.

APC clears senator Orji Kalu, Rep Nkwonta of alleged suspected anti-party utterances.
The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday announced passing a motion against taking disciplinary action against its members whose reported alleged utterences appeared distasteful, anti- party and unacceptable.
The state APC had given some of its members that included senator Orji Uzor Kalu and Rep Chris Nkwonta a 14-day ultimatum to explain their alleged public statements which appeared to be they were supporting the governorship candidate of the rival Labour Party, governor Alex Otti despite that it was stated in some quarters that what the duo said was not for or on behalf of the APC.
The APC said that the decision to.clear the duo was reached at a stakeholders’ meeting held at the APC Secretariat in Umuahia, where party leaders and stakeholders resolved to put past grievances behind them as the party prepares for the 2027 general elections.
The said motion for granting the unconditional clearance was moved by the APC candidate for Aba North and South Constituency seat in tht House of Representatives Hon. Uzor Azubuike, on the ground that the decision was necessary to promote unity and ensure that all members, both loyal and those who had erred, remained together in the interest of the party.
Azubuike also submitted that so doing would impact preventive actions capable of undermining the party’s unity and electoral prospects.
His motion was seconded by the Member representing Bende South State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Emmanuel Ndubuisi.
Noting that the APC has concluded its primaries that were described as the best conducted in the history of the State , the state APC Chairman Hon Chijioke Chukwu said that the party was disposed to addressing grievances arising from the primaries, hence, he appealed to aggrieved members to forgive one another and work together for the success of the party.
He so said “Let’s see how we can move forward and chart a new course. Let’s get a common ground, which is to forgive ourselves. We cannot take over this state in disunity”.
He also counseled aggrieved stakeholders and members not to take their complaints to the media, advising them instead, to channel such issues to the appropriate party organs for redress.
Warning members who remain in the APC but work for other political parties, that the APC would however not tolerate such acts of disloyalty, he declared that the APC was not entering into any alliance.
” Let us therefore remain committed to the party and work collectively towards achieving our political objectives in the state”, Chairman Chukwu stated.

New political momentum gathers in Obinwa West Constituency as Mrs Victoria Onwubiko, CEO Abia Signage Advertising Agency declares to contest for Abia House of Assembly seat
A new political momentum is gathering strength in Obingwa West as Mrs Victoria Dibumma Onwubiko formally declared her intention to contest for the Abia State House of Assembly seat for Obingwa West Uhie Constituency under the Labour Party, presenting herself as a consensus driven aspirant focused on competent representation, inclusive governance and sustainable development.
Addressing party leaders, traditional rulers, women, youths and supporters during her declaration, Mrs Onwubiko said her decision to seek legislative office was inspired by a deep understanding of the challenges confronting the people of Obingwa West and a firm belief that effective representation remains critical to community growth and social transformation. She stated that her aspiration goes beyond political titles, stressing that leadership must be rooted in service, accountability and practical solutions to the daily realities faced by ordinary citizens.
The Labour Party aspirant, who was immediate past Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Abia State Structures for Signage and Advertisement Agency, who had since resigned however said that her years in both the private and public sectors have equipped her with the administrative discipline, policy understanding and leadership capacity required to function effectively in the legislature.
According to her, governance demands more than ceremonial appearances, noting that lawmakers must actively participate in lawmaking, representation and oversight responsibilities that directly impact the welfare of citizens.
Speaking on her vision for Obingwa West, Mrs Onwubiko outlined plans to champion laws and policies aimed at youth empowerment, women support initiatives, improved education, healthcare delivery, infrastructural expansion and economic development. She pledged to advocate programmes capable of creating opportunities for young people, strengthening small businesses and improving road networks linking rural communities to markets and social services.
She explained that her experience since relocating to Osaa Ukwu in 2018 had given her closer contact with the realities confronting traders, farmers, artisans, teachers and families across the constituency.
She noted that these interactions deepened her resolve to pursue policies that would directly address unemployment, poor infrastructure and limited economic opportunities affecting residents of the area.
Mrs Onwubiko further highlighted her professional accomplishments, recalling her career progression from Unilever Nigeria to senior roles in telecommunications, banking, advertising and public administration. She stated that her recognition as Most Outstanding Staff of the Year at the First Bank Chief Executive Officer Annual Merit Awards reflected her commitment to excellence, innovation and accountability in service delivery.
Academically, she said she possesses the intellectual preparation necessary for legislative responsibilities, citing her degrees in Mass Communication, Marketing and Sociology from reputable institutions within and outside Nigeria. She added that her membership of professional bodies and extensive experience across multiple sectors have strengthened her understanding of governance, communication, public policy and organisational management.
The aspirant also revisited her previous political engagements, noting that she once served as Deputy Woman Leader of the All Progressives Congress in Obingwa before joining the Labour Party in 2022 alongside the political movement that produced Governor Alex Otti. She disclosed that her participation in the 2023 House of Assembly election provided her with wider grassroots exposure and deeper insight into the expectations of the electorate.
In a passionate appeal for greater female inclusion in governance, Mrs Onwubiko expressed concern over what she described as the low representation of women in the legislative process in Abia State. She argued that women constitute a significant part of the population and contribute immensely to family welfare, education, healthcare and economic survival, yet remain underrepresented in decision making positions.
She maintained that increasing women participation in governance should not be viewed as a contest against men but as a necessary step towards balanced leadership and broader societal progress. According to her, empowering capable women to occupy public offices would strengthen governance outcomes and introduce perspectives that could enhance policy formulation and community development.
From the political watch, her declaration is a significant development capable of reshaping political conversations within Obingwa West ahead of the next electoral cycle. Supporters at the event also praised her professional background, grassroots connections and emphasis on purposeful leadership, while many women groups reportedly welcomed her aspiration as a positive signal for greater gender inclusion in Abia politics.
Mrs Onwubiko concluded her declaration with a call for unity, trust and collective action, assuring constituents that her ambition is centred on service, transparency and measurable results. She urged the people of Obingwa West to support a vision that prioritises competence, integrity and inclusive representation for the advancement of Uhie communities.
The declaration is already generating discussions across political and community circles, particularly among advocates of women participation in governance, with many viewing her emergence as a fresh chapter in the evolving political landscape of Obingwa West
